Name: Akua
Picture:
Meaning: Born in the middle of the week...or so my google results say! There was also a 'Queen of the Leader; Wise' which may be a tad bit better, depending on where you stand
Linage: Kwesi x Ayo, siblings: Abena, Chidi (deceased?)
Species: Hyena
Gender: Female
Age: Adult
Personality/Traits: Akua is perhaps your typical hyena female. She is aggressive and even downright mean, although perhaps better words to describe her are basic and brutal. She does not play games for what she wants, does not manipulate; she has the size to be able to afford such a thing. She speaks plainly and, if truth be told, really does not have the capability to lie as elaborately as most do. Akua is not the least bit hesitant, in most matters, to take what she wants when she wants. And she has no qualms about using any means at her disposal to take it - more often than not, these means almost always include her teeth and strength. She has left her mark on many of the Uchawi, especially those forced into the clan under Thema's rule.
Some say she has a touch of her father, Ayo's, madness in her; she does seem to take particular delight in hurting another, including her own siblings and clan-mates. No one is safe from her malice if they invoke it; but Akua is rather good at holding her temper at bay when it suits her to do so. She is not the smartest nor the most cunning out there, but she is at least wise in the ways of the world, as it is with those who pass through young adulthood with the scars to prove it. She is a very capable hunter and fighter and rarely assumes a role outside either of these positions. She knows her own strength and was once a very arrogant individual, but is a more patient individual these days, loyal to the Uchawi in her own way, but still among the females who look for the opportunity to push themselves up in hierarchy.
More than anything these days, Akua is bitter. Bitter for what her own brother attempted and how he stole her best chance for dominance in the Uchawi. Bitter at the knowledge of what she could have had.
History: (I hope you don't mind the liberty I took with Chidi; s/he is not on the FC list and I thought it might be a good chance to throw in a hook for this particular character)
Akua was born to Kwesi after her nephew, Ayo, forced his dominance upon her. Some say the incestuous relationship produced strange cubs in Akua and her siblings, Abena and Chidi. Akua herself, at least, appeared as nothing truly remarkable; no deformations or special traits as anyone could see. She was a bit on the larger side, but that was only to be expected of a female in the Uchawi. Like any young hyena, she fought a good deal, but Akua was especially brutal, not afraid to use her teeth to draw blood, one time even yanking a mouthful of skin from her brother, Chidi's, backside when the two squabbled over a meager impala bone. Akua met with harsh punishment for this act through Ayo; and for the short period of time that she knew her deranged father, she feared him.
This changed when Ayo was slain and, if anything, Akua grew more bold in her brutality. As adolescence came upon Akua, she was quick to throw her generous weight around and take what she wanted where she could. She was continually bullying the males and smaller females, still unconcerned as she ever was that her attacks upon them could cause severe damage.
Thema saw this trait in Akua and used it to her advantage; when Thema pushed to rebuild the Uchawi, Akua was among those trusted enough to go out and force any hyenas that she could find back. And Akua utterly relished the job, performing with an eagerness that bordered on zeal. If a hyena wouldn't come with her, she killed the unfortunate other, leaving the carcass for the vultures. It is Akua who claims to have brought the most back to swell the Uchawi ranks, never settling for anything that did not seem worth the effort to join.
As Thema began to grow old, Akua made no attempt to hide the fact that she would pursue the path of dominant female. Often the female could be seen pacing back and forth away from the pack, eyeing Thema with nothing short of malice, biding her time.
However, it was not to be. Chidi had believed himself to be the heir to their father's legacy, that one day he too would lead the Uchawi and seize one of his sisters to be his mate. He lacked patience for his own plans and one day tried to force himself upon Akua. A vicious and lethal fight ensued, ending with Chidi dead and Akua battered and broken. It took a long, long time for Akua to heal, a period during which her once high-ranked position in the clan began to dwindle. When Dumisani took the dominant position for herself, there was nothing Akua could do; she was in no shape to challenge the other female and has not been able to rake up the courage to do so since.
Description:
There is no prestige or grace in this one; Akua has never really been one to catch the eye. She is a hefty, bulky hyena of good size, well and above that of the typical male, covered in thick sinews. Her dust-hued coat darkens along her topline and over her haunches, lightening toward the tender points and over her underside. Dark spots speckle her hide at random and in abundance, although none are found along her neck or head. Her darkened muzzle is thick and powerful, thick muscling along her jawline, head, and neck testifying that she is, without a doubt, able to hold on to whatever she can grab in her jaws.
A thin mane follows the line of her spine from the top of her head to the length of her tail, which ends in a hue as dark as her jaws. Her eyes are near black with any indication of any other color showing only when the light hits just right; a soft shade of deep, dark mahogany is revealed then. For the most part, this female shows signs of good health; her coat is clean, her physique is capable, and her eyes are bright. A few scars mark her here and there, but who can escape this life without those?
Post Sample: The place seemed familiar; at least, something tugged in the back of Akua's mind, a sharp feeling of remembrance, that made her hesitate. Ears turned forward, head lifting as high as her sloped form would allow, she gazed outward, across the expanse of tall, dry grass, to the river beyond. The feeling was fleeting and it wasn't long before the hyena shoved the memory away and turned too look about, scenting the wind and finding satisfaction in the faint sign that marked their territory. Lowering her head, she makes her way back to where the Uchawi had stopped, eyeing the dozing clan in poorly disguised disgust.
She scratches a bit at the dirt along the rim of where her packmates lay before flopping to the ground, stirring up a cloud of dust. For a long moment, she merely lays, gazing out into the distance, expression blank. Eventually she lays her head down, an ear flicking at the touch of an errant fly, sighing heavily. "Simple things, Akua," she speaks softly to herself, reciting an obviously well-remembered and often used list, "The taste of blood, the smell of wet dirt, chasing, catching, how good it feels to bite." Repeating the chant to herself again, her body settles and relaxes as she begins to doze.

NOTE: Sorry it took me so long to get here. RL is a busy pain in the neck sometimes!
